Coco

Coco has been found by a teenage girl in a trash can, wrapped in a plastic bag along with his four brothers. The little roosters were just few days old, and the girl has taken them to her child room, warmed them, and fed them to give them a chance to live. However, she couldn’t keep them all, and contacted us for help.

Coco has since become a cherished member of our family, and thanks to his strong personality as well as good looks, a favorite among many of the volunteers and our followers. It often comes as a surprise that he likes to be patted and cuddled and chases birds with the dogs. Sometimes, we take him for trips. He’s well behaved, follows us on walks and enjoys our company. Just like a dog (with wings and feathers).

NB: it often comes as a surprise to people when they find out about the practices related to young roosters. Since they don’t lay eggs, they are the „trash“ of the egg industry. While roughly 1/2 of newborn chickens are roosters, only few are needed to take care of reproduction of the hens. Most of the rest get very short life: minced alive, suffocated in a bag, or used as food for captive prey birds, shortly after birth.
